Checkout Charity – Feeling Unphilanthropic

I pride myself in trying to be a good person, always being aware of those who are struggling or suffering and always trying to help out and often doing so.

It is now October, and stores have already started putting out holiday decorations for sale  and very soon christmas music will start playing even before Thanksgiving (yes really!) brainwashing shoppers that the holidays must begin 2 months ahead of schedule.

Along with this holiday spirit comes philanthropy , in the way of every store now joined with a charitable organization and asking for donations with every purchase.

There are  organizations I feel very drawn to personally to donate to yearly, but am peeved that it seems at every store, even groceries now, I am being asked to donate something with every purchase.

I dread the questions and snap decision I will make out of guilt at the checkout , the long line behind me judging me when I do not wish to donate.

Do you want to give a dollar for starving children, or breast cancer or our troops – YES ! of course I want to help them all, they are all doing great work, they are all deserving, but I am not prepared to do so every time I go into a store.

My cash or  credit card is out ,so it’s easy to just say yes – I should say yes -but my mind says no after I have visited about 6 stores in a day  and been asked the same question at the checkout every time .

NO! I do not want a green shamrock with my name on it on the window!

The times I have refused politely – ” no Thanks” ” not today” “I already did last week” “maybe next time” I feel like a really horrible person.

I will donate on my own terms . I need to research an organization. How do I know this donations are going to the right place? Did you know ,some stores keep a small percentage of the donations for admin fees?

There are also so many charity scams out there, so make an educated decision, not a quick impulsive one made out of guilt. And there are smaller charities that need your donations that do not have massive store affiliations.

Do your research before you choose whom to donate to. Check out these sites to begin with.

Here is a funny way of looking at things!

An Embarrasing Election

Once upon a time we would all sit as a family and watch a presidential political debate , no matter which side you were on, you would marvel at the brains of two educated candidates sparring and doing a beautiful dance of words to prove a point.

Yet this year I can hardly even ask my children to watch a debate with me or follow the important democratic process. A process  which is a privilege as most countries do not have a  process such as this, where all men and women can vote freely.

Now, when I turn on the news (which was once a safe tv choice!) I hear obscene words and descriptions of sexual acts  from a presidential candidate  describing a woman’s body or hear the words on the news ~ sexual advance, groping, sexually assault, “forced himself on me”.Isn’t it sad the younger generation can no longer watch a debate or the news because it is too racy?

I understand the media has to bring us the news, but I am truly sickened by what I have to hear every day. Yes, I have the choice of turning it off , but then what?  be cut off from the news?

I am shocked and saddened that our country has become a laughing-stock to the world. This great nation of ours  is now being mocked at throughout this process. How has the election become a sexual debacle? something from a reality show!

I wonder have we evolved into a nation full of hate ,violence, sexual frustrations, racism and intolerance? then we are not as great as a country as we profess to be.

It’s time we have more respect for ourselves, our families our children , our country and rise above to a better standard of how we act and talk  and which politicians we elect to office.

A great example is our current president who, no matter which party he belongs to or what he has done wrong or right , he has had  great character professionally and personally and he has represented our country well around the world this past 8 years.

No country in the world  but ours, has ever had such an embarrassing election process. I am shocked that I live among so many people who  defend bad behavior.

In the end we will have to think very carefully who we want as the face of this nation, who we can send out to lead with pride and who we can respect and who will be respected by world  and religious leaders.Because no matter what anyone says, America is a leading nation for finance, policy and human rights. What happens in America affects the whole world.

Come November, I would like to vote for someone with substance, someone who speaks clearly and intelligently,  someone who does not lose their cool no matter what happens and does not act on impulse, someone who has a good character ,someone who has at least a plan to try to lead this country in the right direction and has vision  and someone who will be respected by the world.

Who that someone will be, is up to you, dear American  reader !

The Election Madness

Whichever side of the fence you are on , or even sitting on the fence we have to laugh at the current American elections. With one candidate being an egomaniac who is often unhinged and shows moments of unbridled insanity to someone who we have seen in politics for the past 2 decades  who we are not sure if we can trust .

Sometimes I wonder if presidential candidates  even care about the people or  the issues or just want the power . So when things get weird or tough or plain nasty like the mudslinging between the two candidates , constituents like me need to laugh.

Where better to find laughter than at Saturday Night Live, with actor Alec Baldwin being the new Trump he truly does a fabulous job. This is a laugh worth sharing, in this parody of the first presidential debate watched the world over.
